America’s Greatness – By Dr. Glenn Cummings

Psalm 33:12 says that the nation which recognizes God as Lord will be blessed.  That is more than simply putting “in God we trust” on our currency and coins.  I think most people can see that over the past years America has been a very blessed nation.  It has not been because of technological advancement or medical discovery.  America’s greatness has not been the result of powerful and influential leaders.  I believe there are two things that have made America great:  The Christian faith and God’s Holy Word. However, at the same time, I must also say, we are witnessing the destruction of this foundation before our very eyes. 

George Washington said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.” Our thirtieth President, Calvin Coolidge said, “The foundation of our society and of our government rests so much on the teachings of the Bible that it would be difficult to support them if faith in these teachings should cease.”
 
On the 4th of July, we celebrate the signing of The Declaration of Independence.  The signing of this document signified America’s official split from Britain’s rule and marked the beginning of the American Revolution.  Let me share part of that declaration: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”  Thomas Jefferson penned those words, and they were ratified and signed by representatives of the 13 original colonies at the meeting of the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia.  These patriots and proud Americans, in this document, recognized that God, our Creator, is the One who has given us life, liberty, and the opportunity to pursue happiness. 
 
When our forefathers landed at Plymouth Rock, they knew that their safe arrival was not because they had a seaworthy ship, nor was it because they had an experienced captain, rather they knew that an Unseen Hand had been their Guiding Force.  They knew that the Captain in charge of this ship–the Ship Mayflower, was God Almighty. In the Mayflower Compact of 1620, they wrote in the “name of God” and to the “glory of God.”
 
Our nation and its greatness is because of men and women who had a heart for God. From the time our forbearers came to this great land and throughout all the years of its existence, God has used Christians to move this nation…not that the unsaved have not  accomplished great things, but the spiritual heart of America is what has guided this nation to Greatness. 
 
Let us be reminded that God blesses a nation”whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). And, on the other hand, let me add; God curses a nation who turns away from Him:  Psalm 9:17, “The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.”

We ought to be thankful that God works as a Guiding Force in the hearts of men.  I’m glad He did a work in my heart, aren’t you?  I’m glad He didn’t leave me to myself–just to wander in spiritual darkness.

 
It is my opinion that the reason America is losing her greatness is because the majority of our citizens no longer understand nor practice the Christian faith. Most have forgotten what made this country great.  It is a relationship with God through Christ.  President Thomas Jefferson wrote, “The reason that Christianity is the best friend of Government is because Christianity is the only religion that changes the heart.”
 
Psalm 119:105, says “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”  When the Pilgrims came to America, the thing they brought with them that was more important than anything else, was not their supplies, it was not their tools, nor the things necessary to sustain them for the days ahead; the thing of most importance to them was a copy of the Bible.
 
When those 102 pilgrims crowded on the Mayflower and left for the New World, they went out onto an open ocean for 2 months. There was hardship, sickness and storms. They huddled together and tried to comfort one another, but do you know where they got that comfort? They got that comfort from the Geneva version of the Scriptures. When they came to America and brought the vision of freedom, that vision opened up to them when they opened up the Bible.  When we need direction in life, when we are off course, the thing that brings us back to where we need to be is this precious, old Book–it is our Beacon of Light.
 
The greatness of America has been due to the confidence men have placed in God’s Word.  They used it, they practiced what was in it, they believed it, and they placed it before the American people as a Guiding Light of hope and as Beacon shining in the darkness.
 
I have walked around Washington DC, and the thing that has stood out to me is that the Scriptures can be seen everywhere–embedded in marble and placed in many of the federal buildings and monuments.  On the metal cap of the 555 foot Washington Monument are the words “praise be to God” and the walls of that monument are lined with Scriptures.   Above the head of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court we find the ten commandments.  On the senate and house chambers is the phrase “in God we trust.” In our pledge, we say “one nation under God.”   When our President is sworn into office, he does so with his left hand on the Bible and they close by saying “so help me God.”  Why was that important to our leaders?  It’s because these men knew that America without God and the Bible would be like a lost, wayward ship, with no direction, tossed about in the darkness of night. 
 
Friend, if you are looking for direction, if you feel that your life has no meaning, I suggest you turn to this Guiding Light–a Beacon for the wayward. I don’t know about you, but I often get weary of the daily struggles in life, weary of trouble and troublesome people, weary of just fighting the old devil at every corner.  That’s why I need this Book.  The Bible is a blessing to me.
 
Let me repeat my earlier statement: Our nation and its greatness is because of men and women who had a heart for God. From the time our forbearers came to this great land and throughout all the years of its existence, God has used Christians to move this nation.  Again, the two things that have made America great are Christianity and the Bible.
 
May we remember with thanksgiving, all the brave men and women who have sacrificed for our freedom; and may we never forget that the greatest sacrifice was made by Jesus Christ, who said in Luke 4:18″I have come to set the captive free.”
 

I wish you a wonderful July 4th holiday and ask that we all pray for our great nation and its leaders.  While you may not agree with all my thoughts in this article, maybe you will agree that we still live in the greatest country in the World!
